MovieMatch Privacy Policy

MovieMatch is an independently operated hobby project that helps you discover movies, save ratings and lists, and find recommendations based on your preferences. This policy explains how Kyle Clearo, operating independently from Orlando, Florida, United States, handles personal information when you use https://www.moviematch.cloud.

1. You can use MovieMatch without providing an email

When you first visit, MovieMatch automatically creates an account through Supabase without asking for an email address or password. This account has a unique identifier that connects your saved movie information to your session. Session information stored in your browser allows MovieMatch to recognize the account when you return using that browser.

We call this an "anonymous account" because you have not provided an email address. It still has a persistent identifier linked to your activity and preferences, which we cover under this policy.

You may optionally add an email address and password to your existing account. This preserves your saved information and lets you sign in on other browsers or devices. Your email can also be used for account-related messages and password resets. Providing an email and password is not required to use the movie-discovery features.

If you clear your browser data or switch browsers or devices without first linking an email address, you may lose access to your existing anonymous account. A new anonymous account may be created. Clearing browser data does not itself delete the information already stored on our servers.

2. Information we handle

We handle:

• Account and session information: your Supabase user identifier and authentication/session information; your email address if you choose to add one.
• Movie information you save: movies you rate and the rating values, streaming-service preferences, and custom lists you create.
• Authentication credentials: if you choose password sign-in, Supabase Auth processes your password and stores a securely hashed version, rather than a readable password.
• Support correspondence: your contact details and the information you send if you contact us.
• Technical security information: information processed by Cloudflare Turnstile, described in Section 4, to help prevent automated abuse.

MovieMatch does not ask for your real name, postal address, phone number, or payment information. Selecting a streaming service tells MovieMatch your preference; it does not connect MovieMatch to that streaming account.

We do not currently use analytics, advertising, marketing emails, or affiliate tracking. If this changes, we will update this policy to describe the tools used and their purpose before they go live.

3. Why we use this information

We use account and session information to recognize your account, protect access to it, and synchronize saved information when you sign in on different devices. We use your ratings, lists, and preferences to provide movie-discovery features and personalize or filter suggestions. We use your email, if provided, for the optional account and recovery features and to respond to correspondence. We use security information to prevent bots and abuse.

Streaming preferences are optional. You can change them in Settings. Without preferences or ratings, suggestions may be less tailored.

4. Service providers and movie-data services

Supabase. We use Supabase for authentication, database storage, and server-side functions. Account information and saved ratings, lists, and preferences are stored in our Supabase project. Supabase processes this information to provide these services on our behalf.

Cloudflare Turnstile. We use Turnstile on account creation to reduce automated abuse. It processes technical signals including IP address, browser User-Agent, TLS fingerprint, and the site key and associated website origin for bot detection. See Cloudflare's Turnstile Privacy Addendum and Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.

The Movie Database (TMDB). Movie search, details, and recommendation requests go through our server-side functions to TMDB. TMDB receives the search terms and movie-related request parameters needed to answer those requests. We do not include your email address or Supabase account identifier in those requests. Movie poster and backdrop images are loaded directly from TMDB's image servers in your browser.

Vercel. Our website is hosted by Vercel, which processes standard web-hosting information (such as IP address and request data) necessary to deliver the site to your browser.

We do not sell your personal information. We provide information to the services described above only as needed to operate MovieMatch.

We may disclose information when required by law or necessary to respond to valid legal requests or to protect the service and its users.

5. Visibility and security

MovieMatch has no public profiles, public lists, or share-link features. Your saved ratings, lists, and preferences are private to your account.

We use Supabase authentication and database Row Level Security to restrict access so that each account can only read or modify its own data. Movie-data API requests are handled through server-side functions so that third-party services do not receive your account information. Supabase stores password hashes rather than readable passwords. No online service can guarantee complete security.

6. Browser storage

MovieMatch stores authentication session information in your browser so it can recognize your account on return visits. Your ratings and preferences are stored in the Supabase database, rather than existing only in your browser.

You can remove stored website data through your browser settings. Doing so may sign you out and cause you to lose access to an anonymous account, without deleting that account's server-side information.

7. Retention and deletion

We retain your account information and saved data for as long as your account remains active. If you would like your account and associated data deleted, contact us at the email address above, ideally from the same browser/device where the account was created so we can verify the request. We will not ask you to send us your password or session token to verify a deletion request.

We are still finalizing an automatic deletion policy for anonymous accounts that go unused for an extended period. Until that policy is published here, anonymous accounts are retained indefinitely unless you request deletion.

8. Your choices and privacy rights

You can use MovieMatch without adding an email address, and you can change your streaming preferences at any time in Settings.

Contact us at the email address above to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information. Depending on applicable law, you may also have rights to obtain a portable copy of your information, restrict our processing of it, withdraw consent where processing relies on consent, and complain to a data protection authority. These rights can be subject to conditions and exceptions. We may need to verify that a request concerns your account before acting on it.

Right to object: Where applicable law provides this right, you can object to processing based on legitimate interests.

9. Processing location

Our Supabase project processes and stores data in the United States. If you access MovieMatch from outside the United States, your account information and saved movie data will be processed in the United States.

10. Children

MovieMatch is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information (such as an email address), please contact us at the email address above so we can address it.

11. Other services and policy changes

Streaming services and other websites linked from MovieMatch operate under their own privacy notices.

We will update this policy when our practices change and will revise the effective date above when we do. Significant changes will be noted on this page.
